Sync playback now and automatic drift not working properly

hello.

Been struggling with this all day, have tried everything in every related thread here to no avail. I think there is something going on with my network set up. Any help would be very much appreciated, have some shows later this week.

Firstly, my mac minis aren’t connecting to each other properly. On startup it says there are two hosts, but in the settings it says “trying to connect”. If I toggle Ableset in Local Network settings on both computers, then toggle ablenet on the A computer, they both show up. I’ve tried static IP’s and followed the steps outlined in a couple of other threads here with no luck.

When they do connect, Sync Playback Now and automatic drift correct don’t work. Failover works, all controls work and i can control either project from either computer both within ableset and with midi. When i trigger a failover (or pause computer A) and click Sync Now, nothing happens…

Every so often it starts to work, but it seems really random and I haven’t been able to replicate it to a point where it still works after reboot.

I’d really like to have it set up so when the macs boot up, ableton and ableset auto open, connect and my set is ready to play without delving into settings and toggling things on both computers every time. Is this wishful thinking?

Hardware/settings as follows;

2x m1 mac mini

OS sequoia

Playaudio1u

Connected direct via ethernet

Static IP 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 as suggested by Leo in another thread, entered correctly in the ableset settings (according to the latest youtube tutorial released with 3.0.

Have tried with auto IPs

Firewall inactive, local host toggled, limit IP address tracking off

Same issue with ableset 3 and the latest beta 3.1.0 which i’m on now

Thanks in advance!

Hey @TORI,

Just to add to my reply in the other thread, it would help a lot if you could confirm these two things:

  1. In macOS Network Settings, does the direct Ethernet connection on both Macs already show as connected with the expected IP configuration before AbleSet is opened?
  2. In AbleSet, are you entering each Mac’s opposite IP address in the AbleNet settings, rather than its own local IP?

Once we have the logs from both machines, we should be able to narrow down whether this is a discovery issue, a permissions issue, or something AbleNet specific.

I’m looking forward to your reply!

Just sent them over. Hope to hear from you soon

Thank you!

ps. Yes i can confirm that there is an ethernet connection, and yes I have opposite IPs filled out correctly. I’ve tried with auto IP also. And now tried rolling back to Ableset 2 all with the same results. Toggling ableset in Local Networks allows the instances of ableset to see eachother, but the drift and sync now still won’t work.

@agustinvolpe possible to check this out for me? I really need to resolve it this week

thank you

Hey @TORI,

Thanks a lot for the detailed info and for your patience, really appreciate it!

We received your log package and we’re already looking into it on our end.
We’ll get back to you as soon as we have more insight.

Thanks! Any clues here? Show Friday, last chance to update/fix the issue tomorrow. Thank you!

Hey @TORI,

Thank you for your patience! I took a look at the log packages you sent and it seems that you’re still running into the issues with Local Network permissions on your Macs. I see that you’re currently on macOS 15.5, but the latest version is 15.7.5.

Could you try updating your machines and check if that improves the connection stability?

Otherwise, the best workaround for now would be to ensure you toggle the Local Network permission for AbleSet off and on again after every reboot to ensure AbleSet has access to other computers on the network.

I’ll release a new beta later today that includes more logging around AbleNet so we can further inspect this issue if it persists after updating your macOS version

Hey Leo. Thanks for looking into this.

I’ll do the updates and cross my fingers, but your suggested workaround
isn’t actually a work around as toggling the network permissions scarcely
fixes the problem. As I said in my thread, drift correction and sync now
function doesn’t work 99% of the time regardless of whether the computers
are seeing each other

Hey @leolabs , updated both computers OS with no improvement. Sync now and drift still not working…

ps. I am running Ableton 11 Standard without max for live… Do i need max for 3?

Regardless, i have already tried reverting back to ableset 2 with no improvement. but perhaps i should go back anyway?
