We create songs as individual ableton projects with a SECTIONS midi track and then import them into setlist projects. “Place Locators on Section Clips” is great superpower for creating the locators, but we still have to go in and manually edit the markers for the start and end of each song we import, and then they are orphaned from the REMOVE command when we inevitably shift things around on the timeline. I surmise that there is no Ableton API for changing locator names, but it sure would be nice (if it doesn’t exist already) if there was a shorthand code you could append to your song start MIDI marker so that AbleSet would know that’s a song start and treat the locator at that position (and the SONG END) as if you renamed the locators.
Hey @dbw, welcome to the forum!
You’re right: at the moment, when importing songs into a larger setlist project, Song Start / Song End locators still have to be placed manually, and they won’t stay linked automatically when shifting the arrangement.
This is mainly because Ableton’s API doesn’t currently allow renaming or dynamically editing locator names, so AbleSet can’t automate that fully right now.
There has been previous discussion about defining Song Start / Song End using MIDI clips.
Here’s the thread where that was talked about earlier.
For now though, the current workflow is the supported one — but really appreciate the suggestion!
