Repeatedly getting "Playhead Lagging" Error Message

Hi,

I’ve been repeatedly getting the “playhead is lagging” error message, and I understand that this should be able to be fixed by zooming in to only a short amount of the timeline in Ableton.

I have been zoomed in, but still getting the error message…. I’m wondering if this is something which might be specific to my system (specs below) and if an update to either Ableton or OS might be a fix? Ideally I’d like to stay on the current OS and Ableton version, as I’m aware that I might fix one issue, but create another…. But if there’s a more stable option out there I’d jump to that.

Might this also be caused by leaving Ableton (and Ableset) open for an extended period?

Generally after soundcheck we don’t close the playback rig down and reboot before the show… But if that’ll solve it then I’m happy to start doing that.

The Ableton rig is only playing back audio, no MIDI, no virtual instruments, and no plugins…. Just the audio stems.

Ableset 3.0.3

Ableton 11.3.43

Mac OS Sequoia 15.1.1

Macbook Air 2022 M2 8GB RAM (x2)

Thanks!

Hey @jonatkinson, welcome to the forum!

The “Playhead is Lagging” warning usually appears when Live’s UI thread is too busy rendering the timeline to report the playhead position to AbleSet at a regular interval.

A few things that should help:

  • Ideally you’d want to keep only one or two songs visible at a time in Arrangement View. If your whole setlist is still rendering in the timeline, it’ll put a strain on the UI thread regardless of how much you’ve zoomed. Try zooming in until only the current song (or the next one) fills the screen.
  • Update AbleSet, Ableton Live, and macOS Sequoia to their latest versions. There have been several bug fixes and improvements since 3.0.3. Same goes for Live 11: make sure you’re on the latest available version. Updating macOS Sequoia to its latest release for general stability is also recommended.

Also, a clean reboot before the show is a solid habit, especially for a critical playback rig.

It doesn’t seem like your hardware is the bottleneck here.

If the warning persists after trying these steps — or if you’d like us to take a look at what the logs show in the meantime — could you please create a Log Package?
You can create a log package by opening AbleSet’s icon tray, clicking the gear icon, and then selecting “Create Log Package”.
Please make sure to include your project files as well (just the .als files, no audio needed).
To send the files, you can upload them to AbleSet’s support inbox.

I’m looking forward to your reply!

Thanks so much for your reply.

I’ve updated the OS, and also Ableset so hopefully that’ll help.

I’ll also get into the habit of doing a clean restart after soundcheck and before the show… Hopefully that combination of changes will help. I’ll come back to you if not.

I know the usual fix for the playhead lag issue is to make sure that the timeline is zoomed in (rather than having the whole set visible)….. I had already been doing that…. But I wonder if switching to Session view in Ableton would have the same effect..? Presumably there’s far less going on in terms of the UI in Session view? Might that be another possible workaround?

Thanks again!

Hey @jonatkinson,

Regarding Session View — I haven’t specifically tested or documented this as a workaround, so we can’t say for sure whether it would make a difference. If you’d like to give it a try, feel free.

It’d be great to hear back whether it helps!
