Reflecting Drum Rack Preset Changes Across Projects?

Hi everyone!

I’m trying to achieve a workflow where changes to a Drum Rack preset in Ableton Live automatically update across multiple projects. This is particularly relevant when using AbleSet, as it involves managing multiple project files for Live performances.

Here’s the issue:

  • I use the same Drum Rack across various projects.
  • When I make updates to my Drum Rack preset (like replacing or adding samples), and then save it (under the same name), those changes don’t reflect in the other projects.
  • Currently, I have to manually replace the Drum Rack in each project, which is time-consuming.

I posted about this on the Ableton forum as well to explore potential solutions, if there is one.
If anyone here has ideas or workarounds, I’d really appreciate your input!

Thanks!

Cheers,
Agus

It would be super cool if Ableton offered some kind of method to dynamically load racks from a central file, but afaik this isn’t possible as of now.

You could think of outsourcing your drum rack to another application like MainStage, Battery, etc. so it’s independent of your Ableton projects. Would that be an acceptable workaround?

Thanks for the suggestion, Léo! That workaround does sound interesting, but for it to work in my case, the Drum Rack/plugin I use would need to be extremely lightweight.

Do you have any recommendations for plugins or tools that are especially resource-friendly?

Thanks again for your input!

BTW, I looked into a few options and found Sitala, which is incredibly lightweight and works perfectly for what I need. Running it in standalone mode seems like the best solution for now, as it keeps things efficient while allowing me to centralize my samples outside of Ableton projects in multi-file sets.
Appreciate the guidance—it definitely helped me narrow down my approach!

Cheers!

That looks great, thanks for sharing!
