I get a message from ableset that my quantization is too short, but I need it (musically) directly go to the next section. It functions like this now, but I get this occasional message.
The problem is that computers are slow, and due to limitations in Ableton, it’s not possible for Ableset to jump to a locator with precise enough timing to be musically accurate. Instead, Ableset triggers a locator a fraction of a second early. If your quantization is set to something like 1/4, then this jump will happen perfectly on the next quarter bar (1 beat, assuming 4/4), keeping your music in time. If you have no quantization at all, then Ableton will jump as soon as it receives the command from Ableset, which is unpredictable and could easily mess up your rhythm. That’s why Ableset warns you about your quantization.
What do you mean when you say you need it to musically directly go to the next section? I’ve never run into a situation in which a 1/4 quantization caused a problem with that.
Thanks for your answer. The nature of my music is so that it requires immediate transitions, when it’s without tempo for example and I am playing a difficult phrase on my instrument that goes to an exact point where I need a musical action to happen and it needs to be exactly in time with my phrase, which is without a fixed tempo. I can’t use ableset if it doesn’t allow for quantization to be none I am afraid.
Also I need ableton to switch between quantization values, I do this with Clyphx so it automatically changes in a set. I read something about instant jumps but this would require a separate button which is not practical.
Am I right in assuming that if i trigger the next section/song myself with a button, there is no problem, but that the problem is only there when the jumping is determined by ableset? I can change the quantization to one bar in those cases, also, I have the quantization to none in only the cases where I trigger the next section myself.
Hey @teach,
You can just ignore that message. Keep in mind as a heads up though that with quantization involved, the jump might happen a bit too soon depending on locator placement, so if timing ever feels off that’s the first thing to check.
Hope that helps!
tnx for this. You mean that how I use Ableset at this time that it is doable? Please note that when I want ablest to jump by itself, the quantization will be on 1/4 or more, I change the quantization with clyphx
