Multi-Project supports Sub-Folder structure

Similar to the way the LYRICS folder supports sub-folders, with each song having a folder, I would like to float that it would be “cleaner” if Multi-Projects somehow also supported having the “song files” (.als files?) in sub-folders (and then, of course, each song’s SAMPLES folder, that song’s lyrics, and other folders related to X song, would be cleanly tucked away and not co-mingled). Since I have no context in the programming involved, perhaps this idea is a no-go for Ableton/Ableset. Yet, from a non-programmer view, I wonder if META.txt files could exist in the “Multi-Project” folder, one for each song, and Ableset would read these .txt files instead…and inside each .txt file, the meta data would spell out the folder path to the actual .als song file. And if this Meta.txt idea would work, then of course, additional Meta data could be inserted into the .txt files, like “notes”, “song key”, “tempo”, etc.

Or, perhaps, instead of Meta files, simple any sub-folder in the AS MP folder with a name starting with ^ (or some character) could be treated as a “song name” in AS multi-project.

Well, thanks for considering this kind of Feature Request enhancement to Multi-Projects. Prost!

Perhaps I will add, how this could be, not only more clean, but more efficient. I do all my pre-production in separate song folder (so each song has it own SAMPLE folder, etc.). So when a song is ready to go on the setlist, I just want to copy the entire the Folder to the “Multi-Project” (MP) folder. But unless I am missing something, right now, I must move the .als file to the MP folder, and then copy all my wav files from my pre-production SAMPLES folders, to the MP\samples folder. Perhaps I am missing some obvious approach to make this easier, but for now, I like how this Feature Request would be more efficient.

Hey @nevillewhitemusic,

AbleSet already supports sub-folders for multi-file projects. It just looks for .als files anywhere in the multi-file project directory and adds those as songs, with the name of the .als file being the name of the song.

So the structure you described, where each song lives in its own project folder is possible as long as they’re all located within your multi-file project folder.

Let me know if this works for you!

Hello, thank you for the info. Seems like I already have this feature. So, before I celebrate, let me double confirm, when you say “It just looks for .als files anywhere in the multi-file project directory and adds those as songs”, does that mean “anywhere,… in any sub-folder of the MP directory”?

(btw sorry to take your time up…I didn’t test this…I assumed (booo) the .als files needed to be at the top of the directory tree).

all the best
nw

Hey @nevillewhitemusic,

Project files can live in any sub-folder of the multi-file project directory, so you should be good with how you intend to set up your folder structure.
