How to create a private local wifi on recent MacOS to be used with AbleSet?

On older Mac systems (e.g. Snow Leopard) I remember it was easy to create a local private network on Mac and expose it to other devices via wifi.
I would like to do the same on recent MacOS (14.7 here) so that I don’t need to use any router or smartphone as hotspot on stage and can run AbleSet server directly on the private network. I have tried several times but I can’t get it to work. They call it “Internet Sharing” now on recent MacOS, but when I create a network I can’t find it from other wifi devices like iphone or ipad.

Has anyone managed to create a private network on recent Mac systems?

Hey @spinlud,

Generally, I wouldn’t recommend relying on your Mac’s built-in WiFi to connect other devices to AbleSet on stage as it might not be able to handle interference from other devices well.

That being said, if you’d still like to use this setup, this guide for the latest version of macOS might help you: Share the internet connection on Mac with other network users - Apple Support

Let me know if you have any further questions!

Hi Leo, thank you for the answer.
I have tried that steps as well on Sonoma, never get it to work. The thing is I am not interested to connect to internet, I just want to create a wifi (private) LAN. But when using Internet Sharing on recent macOS, I suspect they want you to be connected to internet (through ethernet or other sources like usb) before broadcasting the ad hoc network. In the previous operative systems, it was possible to create a local network even if you weren’t connected to internet and make it visible to other wifi devices.
I am interested in knowing if anyone has managed to make it work on recent macOS versions. It would be useful to create a private LAN on stage without having to bring a router.
