Do song ends still follow quantized jump mode

Our project has a bunch of songs in it, I use the Song Name to tag the start of the song and “Song End” to tag the end. This works fine most of the time but I’ve noticed if the time between songs in my project is short it may jump to the next song in the project layout momentarily before it jumps to the next song. I can tell because I have a recording of the song name in a queue track for each song at the very start, and sometimes i hear part of that before ableset jumpts to the right song and plays the right name queue.

Hey @KevinP, jumps from a SONG END locator to the start locator of the next song always follow Live’s global quantization. I’d recommend setting it to 1 bar, and making sure that there’s at least two bars of space between songs. You can insert empty space using the “Insert Time” (⌘ I) tool in Live.

Let me know if this helps

Thanks, for Looping behavior I get the desire for this behavior, on the SONG END tag I think it’s a bit odd to force it to wait after you have told the song to end. They appear to both be controlled by the same behavior, which is a bit limiting. It’s not the end of the world but when you’re setting up tight song to song transitions an extra second or two feels like a lot, especially when you also have to have a start count for the next song, at 120 BPM that could end up being 3 or 4 seconds of lag just waiting.

Hey @KevinP, this is a limitation with how Live works, unfortunately. To get a smooth jump from one locator to another AbleSet triggers the next locator a few milliseconds before reaching the previous locator. Live will always respect the global quantization when jumping to locators.

However, if you set everything up correctly and make sure that both SONG END and song locators are placed on a downbeat and quantization is set to 1 bar, there won’t be any gap between two songs.

Unfortunately making every song begin and end on a specific downbeat wouldn’t exactly be setting everything up correctly. Some songs end at weird spots in the measure, or have a rolling hit that extends past the 4, so then you’re waiting out an entire measure, then at minimum you have your 4 beat count in for another song (can’t start without at least a little reference to tempo). Understood that it is a limitation of live on how the playback works in Ableton though.

@KevinP you can also decrease the quantization to 1/4 and ensure that all locators are placed on a beat. That gives you a bit more room for moving songs tighter together if they don’t end on a downbeat.

I was going to ask about that but figured I’d test it instead of bugging you . If I set quantize to 1/4 then I also need to then change my jump mode to end of section so it always plays out the current section and we don’t end up on an odd beat right?

Yes, that would help if you’re aiming to jump between sections while Live is playing

I use loops for things like improv parts (we do a medley that varies a little each time) or crowd sing along or clap along breaks, it’s important they always come out on the 1 so my loops are generally 1 barr that just repeat until I tell it to exit. Currently set to quantize for jump mode which works since Ableton is set to 1 bar, if I change the ableton settings just setting the jump mode to end of section should work for my scenario I believe.
