Hi,
Having songs in separate projects has many advantages (CPU, memory, project loading times, ease of use etc.) but the main disadvantage is populating even smallest changes.
Lets say, you want to change routing on a Click track - you need to open, edit and save every song separately. That takes time.
Instead, I often put all songs in one project, make changes and then time cut everything except first song, save as. Open the main project agan, cut everything except second song etc…
This could be automated since Ableset knows the measures when each song starts and where ends.
Also It would be great if you could go the other way around - from multiple files import songs to one project to make changes. There should be one parameter, “Spacing x measures” between songs.
So it would be great to add a buttons in Settings->Multifile project called Create songs from current project.
And also Import song files to current project" with the Spacing parameter.
This would be super useful. I have nearly 300 song files and making a minor change is a huge pain.
The guy over at “FromStudioToStgae” (Will) did do a video some time ago about an app a friend of his was developing that would edit multiple song files from a single command IE, change routing of a click track, it would then recurse through all song files in a folder and edit the project file (its a kind of XML I believe) in every file. Done in seconds. But it didn’t seem to get finished, which is a great pity.
Maybe an opportunity for you @leolabs to create a new small app that can carry out some common basic edit functions across multiple projects? I would certainly pay for it
Heck, even when Ableton update Live and you have to open and re-save the file in the new format, into a different folder etc, automating that would be awesome. Why do the keep changing the format!!! Very annoying. They should at least provide an option to upgrade the file automatically without me having to save it as a copy, remove the old one then rename the new one back to the name it was. Rant over …

Hey @Ondrej_Pernica and @GuitarMark,
That sounds like a great idea, though I imagine it will take a fair amount of work to properly build this. I wonder what obstacles Will’s friend came across that have caused the delays to their project.
I’ll check out the XML format but I can’t make any promises on how doable this would be to implement

Hey @leolabs
Thank you for considering this. I got the feeling that the ‘project’ for Will’s friend was more of an academic exercise rather than something he was going to seriously pursue. But he did say in the video I watched that his friend had got something working very quickly and Will was able to carry out basic edits across all projects within a matter of hours. That may have been over-stating it but he did repeat how relativley easy it was to make these ‘global’ edits.
As I said, I would definitely pay for such a tool. It would save me hours every time Ableton release a new version and change the file format!
If I can be of any assistance with ideas, testing etc, pls let me know. Be happy to help.
Cheers
Mark
