Can I use Ableset to control multiple "takes" recording of vocal on top of multi track backing track?

Hi there!

New to Ableset. A fantastic project! Congrats!

I was wondering if I could use Ableset, not exactly to it’s original goal of playing back a stage set, etc., but for more, recording practice sessions or even final ones?

I could see there is a way to start recording via custom OSC command (if I understood correctly).

Is there a way to say start recording multiple “takes” easily, e.g. starting the recording and whenever you click to a part of a sing, even like multiple times if you want to record multiple “takes” it would really do this in Ableton, including saving the project file, etc.

Appreciate your view!
Thanks!
Imi

Hey Imre — welcome to the forum! :raised_hands:

Glad to hear you’re enjoying AbleSet so far.

Yes, you can definitely use AbleSet for recording practice sessions or multiple takes, not only for playback.

You can trigger recording from:

• Both Setlist View and Performance View. Just make sure to click the gear icon and enable the Record Button.

You can map these to any button:

/global/startRecording → starts recording (and playback if stopped)

/global/stopRecording → stops recording (playback continues)

/global/toggleRecording → toggles recording on/off

Full OSC reference is here.

Make sure the track name contains +OSC, for example:

Record Control +OSC

This makes AbleSet interpret clip names as OSC commands when triggered.

If you want to record several versions of the same section:

  1. Start recording

  2. Enable Loop in that section.
You can also alternatively flag that section with +LOOPFULL to automatically enable the loop.

  3. Each time the loop cycles, Ableton automatically stores it as a new Take in the Take Lanes.

Hope this helps!

I’m looking forward to your reply :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi Agus!

Thank you so much for the detailed and versatile answer! I am impressed.

I will give a try and let you know the result.

Thanks again!

As you probably know, you will need to flag the loop “show take lanes”
